Sometimes I feel like I get that aroma as well when I drink a dark roasty beer that has been hopped with citrusy American hops. B/c of this, I am not a huge fan of american hopped stouts and porters. I feel that the dark roasted grains and citrusy hops can sometimes clash if the balance is off (too hopped for aroma). Depending on the age of the beer when tasted, it could be combination of oxidation and the clash of citrusy hops with dark grains.
