Bottling out of a carboy?

Fri Feb 16, 2007 2:44 pm

In lieu of buying (yet another) bottling bucket and spigot assembly, would it be feasible for me to rack my beer into a clear carboy, mix in sugar, then bottle from there with the aid of an autosiphon?

I bottle like one batch a year so my bucket always gets gross in the interim, I don't know how much I should trust it...

It sounds like you got a bunch of corny kegs laying around, why not just bottle out of one of those? Maybe apply a slight CO2 pressure to assist? and just stop using bottling buckets altogether.

There should be no problem with that.

The only reason I use a bucket is because it has a spout on it. If you just want to use a carboy it serves the same purpose as a bucket without a spout.

Didn't think of that.... Good idea. And ya I got plenty of non-sealing cornies lying around

I bottled from glass for years witout any issues. It's just using the funnel to get the sugar into the carbouy before racking that is a minor pain. Other than that I'd go with "yep". But the keg thing is easier.

Didn't feel like fiddling around with disconnects so I just did it out of glass. All bottled up though, no problems :) Think I'll spring for a beergun or something before I decide to bottle stuff again.
