What is your process for carbonating in kegs?

Thu Feb 01, 2007 7:24 pm

I have asked this before, but am still curious about a step-by step process for the following:

These all assume you have a co2 tank, lines, and a counter pressure filler...

Force carbing a keg - the 3 day route
"Regular" carbing a keg
counter pressure bottle filling (with a B3 CPBF...)

Also - I sanitized my beer line by running star san through it, and now the beer that has followed the star san has a star-sanny bubble type head to it, without a normal foam.

Thanks for any input ahead of time - I am just trying to get my process down, and have 2 full kegs to work with.

I only force carb, but being fairly new I can't give you any lines of "I won 83 awards and this is how it's really done lines" lol...
I make a good apa, porter, and nut brown they are my "staples" I brew them often and I carb them all the same way:
I brew and ferment in a plastic bucket... 7 days later, I rack to a glass carboy... 7 days later I rack to a keg then take a gravity reading. I hook my co2 up and let it run at about 8-10 psi for 20 or 30 seconds then disconnect it and slowly let the pressure out of the keg via the release valve (I look at this as bleeding the oxy out of the keg). I rehook the co2 up and crank it up to 25-30 psi and roll the keg back and forth listening to the bubbling (I have the keg slightly tilted, top on the floor, bottom on my knee). After the bubbling stops... even if I kinda shake the keg... I disconnect and drop the pressure... then let the keg set for a couple days... if it's going to be longer than that till I need it I re add pressure.
