Yes, there is no way that your true OG was 1.017. Your hydrometer may be waaaaay off, but my money is on this

Afterlab wrote:3. After adding 3 gallons of water in the fermenter, the wort sample you took the reading from didn't have an even mixture of wort. i.e. it was mostly water and a little bit of wort thus giving you an inaccurate representation of your wort's sugar composition.

Once the yeast starts fermenting, it will churn things about and you'll be fine.

I'm with Spider on this one. It's actually pretty difficult to get things mixed up well if you add water on top of your wort.

I checked it this morning and the yeast was doing some work. I agree with you about the OG dropping that much. It shouldn't happen. Would it be detrimental to check the OG again later on tonight? I was curious to see if the yeast is making a difference. Thanks again for your help.

It wouldn't be detrimental (unless you manage to contaminate it), but it won't really be beneficial either. The yeast has started working, so any reading you get is going to be somewhat less than your true OG, so you don't really have a way of working back to that. I say just let it work it's yeasty magic.

Agreed with afterlab. There is no way ur og would be that low after adding 8 lbs of extract.

3. After adding 3 gallons of water in the fermenter, the wort sample you took the reading from didn't have an even mixture of wort. i.e. it was mostly water and a little bit of wort thus giving you an inaccurate representation of your wort's sugar composition.

I actually think that this one is right. It's fermenting away right now and I'm 99% positive I did everything the right way. I'll let you all know how it turns out. Thanks for the help!
