Updating that I'm still at it. Weight loss has really slowed, but my waist is continuing to get smaller. Trying to run at least 4 times a week. Feeling better and breathing less hard already. The furthest I've run so far is 3 miles, but that was at a leisurely 10 minute mile pace while chatting with a buddy of mine. Hope to try 4 miles this coming weekend. One difference I'm noting from my running youth...my knees really hurt. I'm getting old and Advil is my friend.

nice work to everyone. i took up running about 2 years ago. i did it a little in high school (all x country). the first two months really sucked and i hated every run. after that i got into a grove and i have been steadily been decreasing my times at 5k's and 10k's. my personal best for a 5k is now down to 24 min which translates to a 7:45 min mile average. my best 10k time came at my last race and i was down to 56 min. That last 3.1 really kills my endurance. running has made hiking a lot easier and i have also been doing a bit of yoga to stretch out from longer runs. i started off at 245 and have progressed down to 190 so far. the weight is still coming off and i am looking at training for my first half marathon here in the next 6 months. as far as i have been hearing, people are really getting after it and running a lot! make sure to give your body at least a day to recover before running. it helps your joints a lot.

bdawg: if you wanna go out for some walks dude, let me know. or if your interested in some nice short hikes.
Cheers!

Has anybody else heard of the Hash House Harriers or Hash Running?

It is a world wide unorganized club. Google them. I'm sure everybody has a group of them nearby. They advertise themselves as a drinking club with a running problem. It is a running game with various beer stops along the way. Our local meets at a restaurant or bar and goes for an hr to hr and a half hash run (complete with beer stops) and then gathers back at the restaurant/bar for dinner.

It is great for exercise, entertainment, and just getting out of a rut.

Still at it. Running 3 to 4 times a week now. Knees are feeling better, but not 100% yet. Lots of stretching and Advil. Performance is improving. I can run 3 miles pretty routinely now in hilly residential streets at about a 9 minute mile pace. Last night I ran 2.2 and pushed myself a little harder and ran at an 8:30 mile pace. Starting to feel stronger in my legs and my breathing/cardiovascular has really improved. Already noticed that my resting heartrate is a lot lower also. I'm not loosing much weight and have flatlined at about 207. But I'm feeling better and seem to be continuing to get slimmer as is evidenced by my pants falling down and having to tighten my belt 2 notches further than I did.

Over the coming weeks I'm going to try to layer in longer runs at a slower pace to try to increase the distance I can run while keeping up the 2.2 mile course trying to get faster and faster. Already thinking about signing up for a 5K this summer...

Also, I've got an iPhone 4S and am using an app called Log Your Run. It's a free app and I highly recommend it. Controls audio, logs runs using the phone's GPS and accelerometers as pedometers. Has voice options to give you updates on mileage/pace and can integrate with heartrate monitors, which I don't have.

Keep it up BNARMY. Gotta be in drinking shape!

I've never been a runner, never could get into it. I run plenty if it's part of other sports (played a lot of soccer back in the day), but just straight running never appealed to me. Part of that could be due to lack of success running on treadmills, and getting bored running in circles on a track. Treadmills sound like they are gonna break when I run on them, so I don't do that any more! :P I've never really been a small guy, I was 6'2" and 200lbs as a freshman in high school (was a thrower in track and field in HS and college). Now that I'm married and in grad school, I've put on another 60 or so (but down from my peak at 275), and I'm certainly don't carry it as 'athletically' as I once did. I'd been doing a lot of cycling, which appeals to me much more... the faster pace and need to be alert and make decisions on pedalling harder, shifting, avoiding obstacles, turns, drafting, etc keeps me from getting bored with it. Went to a conference over the summer and I saved a bunch of money by staying at a campsite 10 miles from the conference instead of in dorms and biking to and fro each day (leaving the campsite before 7, getting back after 10 at night). Unfortunately, when I got back from the conference, as I was unloading my stuff, someone stole my bike during the 5 minutes I was taking something else into the apartment... Needless to say, bad things would have happened if I'd found them, but never did. Weather is getting nicer around here, I need to get another bike fixed up and road worthy, or start saving for a new one, it's been too long since I've gone on a good ride!
