caramunich substitute

Mon Sep 05, 2011 6:43 am

plan on brewing a saison from BCS, uses a small amount of caramunich. looking for opinions on substituting with a crystal malt, or ideas on another substitute, also, recipe isn't clear on whether it should be caramunich 1, 2 or 3, I assume it is 1 based on typical saison color

cheers

The BCS saison recipe calls for caramunich 60L (III). If you can't find that then maybe a higher lovibond caravienne would be a good substitute. I bet you could even get away with a straight crystal 60L too since it only calls for 2 oz.

Just use a similar lovibond xtal. With such a small amount its really only in there for color. If you have caravienna you can use that but its usually about 30 points lighter than caramunich. Cheers
