Question regarding first brew

Mort and I made a batch of beer last weekend. The bubbling has stopped and I know we're supposed to check the gravity to see if it is done. My question is if the beer is done can we siphon that into the glass carboy and let that sit awhile longer? We want to brew again this weekend but the only other thing we have to use is the bottling bucket. We will be needing that before the second batch is done, I think. Our only other option is a fertilizer bucket that we can get for free. Mort said you did not think that was a good idea. I guess if we wait another week, we can bottle and brew on the same day for sure. What do you folks think?

If the beer is done, then go ahead and transfer it and brew again. Yep, avoid that fertilizer bucket, you wouldn't ingest fertilizer normally so you definitely don't want it in your beer. Plastic has a tendency to absorb whatever sets in it a little.

I just checked a sample this morning Milt. It is at 1.008. I think that is done. I was thinking we will leave it until Saturday and then siphon it into that carboy while we are brewing the brown.

You opened the bucket? I thought we agreed to never open the bucket unless I was there? You tasted it, didn't you? How much did you drink? I'm coming out there right now and that bucket better still have five gallons in it!

Come on out. I took enough out to fill the hydrometer thingy and I did taste it. It tasted like beer. I saved some of the sample for you. You are kind of uptight today I think.

Milt is all better now. He got to taste the sample and he saw the bucket is still full. He was a little miffed that I opened the bucket and I guess I do not blame him. I should have waited but I was curious about the hydrometer thingy and how the beer was doing.

Get a bucket just like the one you have the beer in, but piss in it, for days, until it's full. Then tell Milt something must've contaminated and let him have a taste... Oh, wait, Milt can read this..... crap!

Break down and by a couple of carboys, it took me a long time to do it but when I run out of beer I buy more, and I have good taste in beer so at nine to ten bucks a six pack I realized that a few carboys (4) was a small investment, now I have 1 or 2 brews fermenting and a couple in secondary plus I have two stainless (converted cornies kegs good for a later discussion) vessels for further ageing. Rarely run out of beer, if I could lose a few of my beer-swilling friends I would never run out.
