So far I have been unable to discern a way to be logged on automatically.
Is there a way?

There should be an option right under the username / password dialog.

Cliff, I am able to auto log in from home, as that is my prime email address for my account, but when I try from work I have to log in manually each time, even when I check the auto login option

The auto login will create a 'cookie' on your browser, so if your settings clear these every day/week ... then that might be why the auto login isn't working for you.
