Nope. When they say mash hop they mean exactly that --in the mash. If they want you to put hops in the wort when you first start running out your mash they call it -- (wait for it) -- first wort hops.

The utilization is reported to be significantly lower than boil hops, but the theory is that some type of glycosylation is occuring to allow aroma compounds to survive the boil and be liberated in the fermenter.

Others theorize that it's just another opportunity to add hops to your brewing process.

I don't feel that there is a true substitute for Simcoe hops, there are very unique. They have a dank, piney, grapefruit quality that I have not found with any other hops. You can certainly use columbus or summit in its place, but you will know the difference.

Woop, my bad. I guess mash hop is what they mean. I've never tried that, myself. Kind of funny that Northern Brewer is listed as a replacement for simcoe, but athanum has simcoe as a replacement listing. Just goes to show- you've gotta fiddle. Simcoe is still shipping from freshops based on their website, although it has recently acquired a "limit 32 oz" disclaimer. The sky, it's falling y'all.

Personally, I'd try for either Northern Brewer or CTZ. Depends on which aspect of simcoe you particularly want to recpature. Never tried using athanum at all, so I've no idea what it tastes like.

Ahtanum would be a better substitute for Amarillo or Cascade than Simcoe. If you are using Simcoe for a mash hop than Northern Brewer or CTZ would be fine as most of the aromatics will boil off.

looks like simcoe is near impossible to get now in my neck of the woods.

LHBS guy recommends 70/30 blend of Magnum and Northern Brewer. I also found summit as a possible replacement on brewer supply group website.

anyone have any luck with a good substitute?

I'm gonna dry hop with some summit on my next batch to compliment the cascade and hope it hits it like Simcoe would.
