Calculte Gravity/PPG from Calories?

Fri Dec 10, 2010 1:51 pm

Howdy all. If I know how many calories are in a given substance (syrups, candied hinger, etc) how do I use that info to calculate the gravity contribution it would make in a beer?
Thanks!

About the best you can do is convert to equivalent sucrose. Sucrose provides 4 cal/gram so if, for example, you see on a product label that a 1 Oz serving provides 80 calories you would divide the 80 by 4 and conclude that one Oz of whatever it is contains 20 grams of sucrose equivalent. If it's a syrup or someting that is clearly all soluble then you should be in good shape. If it is crystalized ginger or something that is not completely soluble then this approximation won't be so good.
