Keng Goldings in Lager??

Sun Oct 24, 2010 2:00 pm

:?: I don't know why but I've been craving a lager with a hint of Kent Goldings flavor and aroma. I'm thinking of trying a batch. anyone think this is a bad idea? Ever try a commercial Lager or a Lager with Kent Goldings or US Goldings finish?

I'm thinking a standard Bohemian Pilsner with N. Brewer for 35 IBU's of bittering and EKG's to finish. Maybe dry hopping in the keg for more grassy aroma... that might be too far though.

Thoughts?
Well that keg disappeared fast!

I think EKGs have a great earthy spiciness that will work well in many styles that prominently feature noble hops.

I have several friends who are convinced that goldings are a major aroma hop of Bohemia.

In any event, I think it'll make a tasty beer, if not a true-enough to style example.

So brew one! That's the beauty of this hobby we all enjoy. You don't need anyone's permission or approval to brew what you want. Fuck convention. (an all-EKG lager sounds delicious to me, BTW.)

Thanks Elbone. I'm not looking for permission but past experience. I'm only concerned that there is too much earthiness or something in Goldings that would come through in a lager style that isn't noted in a sweeter, malty pale ale or roasty stout. Every time I've used Golding for flavor and aroma it's been in a fairly substantial beer with caramel and/or roasted malts that cover some flavors.

I'm thinking it will be okay because it's floral and spicy like other nobles so it should be okay.

Besides all that I don't have any nobles or low alpha hops in inventory so I was thinking of using up the last of my Kent Goldings and some of my US Goldings in another beer.
Cheers

Doesn't Sam Smith use EKG in their lager?

They use Fuggles and Goldings in their ales but "milder hop varieties for the lagers". That is as much info as I could find on the lagers. Never tried them.

Thanks
