I know it was announced on the 1st of April, yeah. Whether it's an Aprils fools or not; I've not seen any confirmation one way or the other. Common sense would suggest it isn't for real though, you're right.

Original Gravity: 1.068 (1.056 - 1.075)
Terminal Gravity: 1.014 (1.010 - 1.018)
Color: 23.31 (6.0 - 15.0)
Alcohol: 7.2% (5.5% - 7.5%)
Bitterness: 111.6 (40.0 - 70.0)

Ingredients:
25.0 lb American 2-row (Rahr)
1.5 lb Crystal 15
1.25 lb Carafa Special TYPE III
1.0 lb Cara-Pils Malt
1.0 lb Red Wheat
1.0 oz Chinook ('09 H.D.) (12.4%) - added during boil, boiled 90 min
1.5 oz Columbus ('09 H.D.) (15.2%) - added during boil, boiled 60 min
1.0 oz Simcoe ('07 AUS) (12.4%) - added during boil, boiled 45 min

Notes
Mash temp: 147F. Mash duration: 60. Boil duration: 90. Fermentation temp: 64F to start, raising to 72F by the end. Dry hop at 72F for 1 week, then cold crash for 1 day before kegging.

No problem, keep in mind that's an 11 gal batch. Honestly the flameout hops could probably be reduced without much change in the final product. So much of that character gets blown off by the fermentation activity. One of these days I'll get the balls to brew an IPA without any flameout hops and only use dry hops for flavor/aroma to see just exactly how much it matters. It sure would save money if I ended up getting the same hop presence!

Hearing your theory makes me want to brew the next IPA I brew in this manner. Mash hop for bitterness and dry hop for aroma and flavor and forgo any kettle hopping whatsoever. Maybe I am the only one but I just think it would be cool to have a nice hoppy IPA without any kettle hops.

Yeah, that would be a cool experiment. But having played around with mash hopping I do have doubts that you'd be able to get enough bitterness in the beer. Still, I'd love to hear how it turns out!

Maybe supplement with a little hop extract?
