FermCapS Foam Control

Tue Apr 06, 2010 7:02 pm

I am doing a 2 liter starter this evening and I will be using FermCapS foam control for the first time. It came with no directions. Anyone know how many drops to add to a 2 liter starter (Erlenmeyer flask) to prevent boil overs?

Thanks!

Til it stops foaming...seriously. Half a dropper? 2 drops? I've found each starter to be a little different.

I used to put 2 drops in my 2L starter. The only complaint I have with any of these defoamers is that it really changes the appearance of CO2 production in the starter. This makes it a bit difficult to judge as to when the starter is ready to pitch IMO. Eventually my 2L flask cracked so I purchased a 3L flask and no longer have to use foam control.

The instruction that came with mine said 2-3 drops per gallon in the boil kettle, and 1-2 drops per gallon if you use it in the fermentor. So one drop should be good for a starter.

+1, one drop does the trick. I add before the boil starts, set my stove burner to the 5 o'clock position, set the timer to 10 minutes when the boil starts and leave, come back when the timer goes off. No fuss, no muss!
