storing grains

Sat Jan 30, 2010 6:35 pm

there may be an obvious answer that i'm missing here. the new cold room has plenty of space and i have 170 lbs of grain. i was planning on storing it all at 38 in air tight containers. i've read in two articles that "grain should be stored between 50 and 70". i cant think of what i'm hurting by keeping it cool. moisture wont be a problem. cant imagine that enzymes could be handicapped and i know the sugars should be fine, so what is the reason?

If I'm not mistaken.....JZ stores his inside his cold room as well....base malts in trash bags inside trash cans. Looking to start my collection of vittle vaults myself.....just don't have a great storage room for them yet. Think there was a Brew Strong show on this....or might have been during one of his other appearances. (Looked through the show titles....didn't see it...but I do remember hearing JZ talk about grain storage at some point)

I think that JZ talked about grain storage in the Malt Analysis show, but I am often wrong.

Me too...I just dumped my first 50 lb. bag of 2-row into my vittle vault I got for Christmas. I keep it in my basement which is around 45 right now.
