What the heck is this stuff?

Tue Aug 29, 2006 7:03 am

Found this stuff growing in the back yard but cant figure out what it is. A friend of mine said it might be some kind of hops, but that was before it started to bud. I believed her at first for two reasons. One, she is a plant nut. Actually plant freak would better discribe her. And two, I really wanted it to be hops.

Any guesses?

I'm no expert, and maybe I'm not seeing it right, but it looks like this is a bush, whereas hops grow on a vine... I think.

Throw them in beer... see what happens.

This is closer to what hops looks like.

And like it was said earlier, hops grow in a vine, not a bush.Image

It is a vine, not a bush. It just hasn't had anything to grow up and I've been bunching it up in that area so it will not spread. When it first started growing the vine and leaf shape wasnt like anything my plant expert could find. Her best guess was a hop plant. Once it started to bud it became clear that it most likely was not a hop. So the question still remains.

What is it?

It does look like a hop plant except for the buds. I have never seen one, but it may be a male hop plant which do not produce the cone shaped flowers used for brewing like the females do.

Bub is right now that I look at it closer, the leaf is all wrong. Five points instead of three. Rip that fucker out and plant some hops!
