Let's build a beer out of.....

Mon Jan 25, 2010 9:23 pm

I have some ingredients that I want to pull together to make a new recipe. Board member Lucybear999 was super generous and gave me a sealed bag of Brewers Gold hop pellets. I'm thinking that I want to use them in either an English style beer of some sorts, or possibly even a big German Lager.

I also want to employ the use of one of, or preferrably both, Marris Otter Pale and Munich 10L I have hanging around. (I have roughly 8lbs of each. Though I don't necessarily expect to use all of both of them)

I'm racking my brain here trying to figure out the best way to throw these together. We're certainly not limited to JUST these ingredients. But something that uses what I have here as a start.

Any inspiration?

Perhaps use it all and go for an english style barleywine. Use some Wyeast 1728 to ferment it. Make a scottish 60 first and then use the yeast cake for the BW.

Maris isn't really appropriate for german beers, Munich is not really appropriate for English beers. Take the maris, add a pound of crystal 40, and hop as you like = English pale ale. Take the munich, add a little more munich, 6 oz of dehusked carafa = Munich dunkel, (hopped lightly). Maybe you could combine the maris and munich and work towards an Alt beer.
On Deck:
Cream Ale
Fermenting:
Dusseldorf Altbier
On Tap:
Brown Porter

Do a Mild or a Northern Brown and submit it in the name of MSBS to the club only comp in Feb.
We could hold a special meeting to vote....

I think Maris Otter would be quite nice in a Dunkel, or a bock/doppelbock. Of course it isn't traditional, but who cares.
