What to brew with these Hops?

Tue Jan 19, 2010 4:54 pm

I have been racking my brain on what to brew with the hops I have right now. The oddball assortment is Cascade, Northern Brewer and Chinook. The Cascades and NB are leftover from a Tasty's Brown that is in the fermenter. The Chinook was given to me and I have no idea what to do with those, with the exception of an Arrogant Bastard clone.

I have tossed around a single hopped Pale with the Cascades, but don't think I would like it. I tossed around a Cal Common for the NB and that could happen. These don't have to be the exclusive hops, but I have over a half pound of all 3 and would like to use up a chunk of them.

I was even thinking about a hop burst of late additions with something.

A nice hop burst will get rid of a lot of those hops. A double IPA utilizing that technique will get rid of even more.

I agree that those hops'll go great in an APA.

You didn't say how much of each you have, but I'd think about doing it this way:

Combine the Chinook and Cascade into a 50:50 blend. Add an oz of this combination per addition at 15, 10, 5, and 0 mins hop burst style to fill out the flavor and aroma. Tuen, use your brewing software to calculate the IBU contributions for those flavor/aroma hops and then add enough of the NB at FWH to hit ~40 IBUs in a 1.055 to 1.060 beer.

Whatever is left, use as a dry hop.

The Northern Brewer and Cascades are leftover from Tasty's Brown, so you guys were on the right page. I have a full pound of Chinook and probably 10-12 ounces of both Northern Brewer and Cascade.

I am going to play around with the hop burst pale idea in Beer Tools and see what comes of it. I haven't ever finished a beer with Chinook though, so I am a little apprehensive with those.

Does anyone have an knowledge on the Chinook?
