Volume of 3.3 lbs LME?

Wed Sep 16, 2009 3:45 pm

Heya folks,

Does anybody know the VOLUME of a 3.3 lb can of liquid malt extract? I went for it finally, and got the big boy 33.0 jug-o-extract, but now I don't have a means to measure it out. But I know somebody's done this before!

Thanks guys! (first time poster, thrid-year brewer)

Welcome!

Just weigh an empty tupperware (or some other container), then weigh it again with the LME in it, and subtract the difference (or put the container on and reset the scale to zero first). You'll need a scale for your DME and specialty grains anyways. Use the same one. All recipes go by weight, not volume when it comes to extract. Save yourself the time, effort by weighing from the beginning. You'll be glad you did.

Thanks for weighing in BD!

I guess I was hoping to do it all without investing in a scale, so I could go about this with a one quart measuring cup. I work in a biology lab by day, and I'm surrounded by fancy scales, and occasionally I'll weigh my grains here, but man these suckers are expensive.

Anyhoo, after I posted this, I was going through some old brew notes, and I saw some scribblage indicating that I'd dumped a 3.3 lb can and measured it, and it came out to roughly 1 quart. I'm going to go with this - and just monitor my gravity reading closely!

I've gone thru the same thing & have figured 1lb of LME is = to 10 fluid oz.Even if this is not exact since you remain consistent it certainly works

I would, however, highly recommend in the investment for a digital scale.

I brew with a buddy, and we always go back and forth over every single penny spent. We're the cheapest brewers in the world, and even we found that the digital scale was well worth the cost. After the 5 dollar hose, and the wort chiller, it's the best thing we ever got. From grains to hops to sugar, it allows us to really get the most out of brewing.

Cool ElfRed, we're pretty much bang-on, knowing that 1 qt = 32 fluid oz. Your observation puts 1 qt at 3.2 lbs.

Thanks y'all!

Adding to what Gbob said, you can get a scale that works for what you need for a pretty good price.

I picked up one of these:

http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=120841&RN=1151

We get 20% off any one item coupons all the time in the mail and paper and I caught it when they still had the silver version and clearanced them. Mine was like $15, and I really bought it to do specialty grain measures and hops, but it does have a 7 Lb capacity. So it is great until you want to do a big beer, then you have to weigh extract in two shots. I did an IIPA about two weeks ago now and it had 12 lb of LME, and 12 oz of Amarillo, and I measured eveything on this little fella. The SS top doesn't hurt either.

They'll always take those 20% coupons regardless of the expiration date too.

I am secure enough to admit that I carry about 10 of those coupons around with me at all times. Never know when you might be out and need something. :unicornrainbow:
