Vacu seals..

Wed Dec 16, 2009 11:57 am

I usually use this product http://reviews.canadiantire.ca/9045/053 ... eviews.htm to re-seal my hops when I only use a certain amount. But I recently have found that these bags no longer keep their seal properly. I'm looking to get some of your advice on how you guys store your unused hops and if you use some type of ''vacu seal'' system.

Thanks

The wife got us a Food Saver as a joint X-Mas Gift. It's a bit pricey, but very muiltifunctional. I can create the size of bag I want, and it seals quite nicely. It also allows me to move the hop measuring part of my brew day to another day, by pre-weighing and bagging them by time addition, saving a little time on brew day.

I can also part out some to buddies when the LHBS is out out what they need. And no, my scales aren't good for weighing coke.

I've used the same, but have a bag in a bag (i.e. use the small vacu bags for 2 oz, and then put several of those in the larger bag) and it seems to help. The problem with the vacubag is even a small amount of debris can mess with the valve.

Once I run out of bags I think I will use the "Foodsaver" instead that my local Costco started selling.

Check out this thread...some decent information there. I love my food saver.

I transfer my remaining hops to foodsaver bags, and double seal each end, then write in sharpie the weight and type. I tried re-sealing the shiny non-permeable bags that the hops come in, but for some reason my food saver will not pull vacuum with those. It's mystifying.

Commercial bags are usually sealed with a nozzle-type sealer. I use one from Sorbent systems, which will seal bags from hops-direct, the LHBS and most commercial food style bags. It will not work with food-saver type systems, which use a channel system of sealing. This is also why foodsaver sealers do not work with commercially sealed products. I love the Sorbent sealer I have, it is lab grade, cheaper than a 'good' foodsaver and all of the parts are replaceable. You can't get bags at Target, but you can from the website or from a variety of local wholesalers. You can also get tons of weird bags, including those beverage bags they are starting to put beer and cocktails into.
