Sierra Nevada & DFH - Life & Limb... Anyone yet?

I happened to be at Sierra Nevada the day they brewed it....had dinner with Sam and Ken....halfway through dinner Ken walked off and came back with a tray full of small cups with some of the second runnings.

I haven't had the fermented stuff yet

Had Life & Limb from the bottle last week. Definitely be interesting to see how it ages.

One of the local bars got in ten gallons of each beer and 55 bottles of Life & Limb. Only one bottle per person allowed and they began selling at 5 pm last Thursday. By the time we got there at about 7 the bottles were long gone and they had already blown the Life & Limb. So we settled for Limb & Life. I knew we should have gotten there earlier, but I hate rushing somewhere straight from work and we didn't want to have to buy dinner at the bar. Limb & Life was pretty thin but I expected that from these posts. It was still damn tastey IMO though. I hadn't really read anything about the beer yet so I was surprised to get all that American hop aroma in my nose at first. A good beer, but I don't think I would go out of my way for more of the Limb & Life. I would love a chance to taste Life & Limb though! Anyone have a bottle they want to give away.

The Co-op just got 2 cases up here to Boise, Idaho, and I was lucky enough to get a bottle of Life and Limb. A month prior, the Limb and Life went on tap at my favorite local beer bar, The Front Door. I'm going to venture a guess that the birch syrup helped make the Life and Limb scary drinkable, made the Limb and Life a bit thin... I can't believe that they made a big beer that goes down so easy, and hides the alcohol content so well. Not even a hint of hot alcohol flavor! I'm on the fence about aging it though, any predictions what flavors might develop or retreat?

SIerra Nevada has done an awesome job with hiding alcohol deep within their beers. Having tasting their recent Beer Camp Beers: Golden Ticket Baltic Porter and Old Cantankerous Ale, they are both 7-8% beers with a well hidden alcohol. Controlling fermentation temperature is the key in the process. Keeping the yeast on the low end of the yeasts ideal fermentation temperature helps to keep everything in check.

Here is an interesting fact: Sierra Nevada has never used any sugar or extract in their almost 30 years of brewing until wed 9.9.09 when Sam and Ken brewed Life and Limb. Then on that Friday 9.11.09 the Golden Ticket Baltic Porter had 10 lbs of molasses added to it. I doubt that a n extract trend will occur however, Sierra Nevada is really open to brewing some different beers with their beer camp experiences and planned collaboration beers to celebrate their 30 year anniversary next year. They just do an awesome job!

i just had this the other night and though it was overrated. the alcohol is well hidden making it an easy sipper but other than that there wasn't anything in the hop or malt department making me think this was anything super special ( actually wait DFH made a subtle brew... that is amazing!) just my humble opinion.
by the way if anyone in the PDX area is looking for this they have bombers for around 5 bucks at the zupan's on 23rd and burnside.
