Klages Malt???

Sat Oct 10, 2009 5:52 am

OK, so....a friend of mine has the Home Brewers Gold book written by Charlie Papazian back in 1997, which has recipes for all of the award winning beers from the 1996 World Beer Cup. Listed as a base grain in alot of the recipes is American 2 Row Klages pale malt......question is, is this just an everyday ordinary 2 Row malt...just a company/maltster's name?? I am assuming so, but we all know what happens when one assumes anything.

It doesn't refer to it in any way, (Lovibond) other than Klages......

Anyway, thanks for any input you asshats have!

Cheers

Klages is an old strain of domestic US 2 row base malt, the same way that Maris Otter is a British base malt. It isn't available any more. Klages has gone bye-bye because newer strains are better, such as Harrington.
Substitute any US domestic 2 row in recipes that call for it.

Doesn't Rogue still use it? It has been a while since I read the fine print on a bottle of Dead Guy, but it used to say brewed with 2-row Klages & Harrington malts.

+1 on using any quality American 2-row. I really like Rahr, not that I've done a bunch of side by sides or anything.

I don't think so. I'll ask Hutch on Monday when I go to Rogue Issaquah for my BJCP class.

Man, those maltsters must have powerful orgasms after making all that Kegel malt.
