Carapils vs. Carafoam

Are these malts basically the same thing? I've never used them before, but they keep popping up in JZ's and Tasty's recipes. It's hard to argue with success.

To my knowledge they are. I believe in the mouthfeel episode of Brew Strong Jamil and John Palmer mention both as options for increasing the "body" in the beer. I'm sure there are differences in malt analysis, but besides that I think the only difference is that Carapils is made by Briess and Carafoam by Weyermann. In other words, same function, different in composition and manufacturer.

They are essentially the same malt - they're certainly "designed" to do the same thing, which is add dextrins. Carafoam is likely made from the same cultivar of barley that Weyermann's pils is made from, but I'm not sure. When ever I brew my pils or impy pils, I use Carafoam along with the rest of my Euro-based malts. When I brew American styles, such as IPAs and DIPAs, I opt for Briess Carapils. I tend not to mix EU malts with NAFTA malts ;)

Yeah, Carapils® is trademarked by Briess, and I'm pretty sure they have a pretty unique process for this malt. It was the malt they were the most "hush, hush" about when I was asking q's about their malts on a tour I took a few weeks back.

I tour Weyermann in the end of November... I'll see what I can bring back on that from the horses mouth.
