I love the smell of DME in the morning.

Wed Aug 19, 2009 8:05 am

Boiling up my starter for tonight's brew session. First extract session in more than a year. Interestingly, the starter will boil for just as long as the batch, my late hopped, 10 minute IPA. Recipe below. I'll let you know how it turns out. Last minute input on the recipe welcome.

if you're doing extract the malt's already been through a full boil, and if you make huge hop additions you should get equivalent IBUs but with more aroma and way less time watching the pot boil.

What Phil said. I'm trying to bang out a quickie extract IPA that I can brew in an hour or so that's hoppy, tasty and drinkable to brew and fill a tap handle in between my usual all grain sessions.

Expensive, though.

Brewed this up last night. Here's my notes from Promash:

6:34-6:57 - Fill kettle, heat to 170, add LME and combine, add steeping grains.
6:57-6:58- Hop sniffing- Holy shit, 3/4 lb of hops smells good!!!!
6:59-7:15- Begin boil, to remove steeping grains at 168.
7:33 hops in boil
7:43 Flame out, 1 minute hops in, cill water on.
7:48 wort at 140f

I hit all my numbers, an easy thing to do with extract. I was done in 90 minutes, more or less. If I had any ice left in my icemaker to recirc through my IC, I would probably have been done sooner. That means I can get the kids to bed, brew an IPA and still be in bed at a reasonable time.

The wort smelled great, as expected. I'll update as I package and taste.
