Both Lactose and Oatmeal in a stout?

Thu Aug 06, 2009 4:46 pm

I was just listening to Jamil's "Sweet Stout" program, and was wondering: Has anyone here ever tried using, say, 1/2 pound of Oatmeal in a milk stout?

What are your experiences?

The oats lend a smoothness...the lactose is the residual sweetness in a sweet stout. kind of two different things, but should work out well. i use oats in all my stouts.
Jan Wolfhouse: So yeah, I heard you got fired from the brewery?

Landfill: [Landfill gets mad, throws his trophy] God damn brewery! You know that brewery makes 10,000 bottles of beer a day. I drink 45 of them, and I'm the asshole!

I don't remember ever making a stout of any kind without oats. My stouts all taste good. Go for it!

It's pretty typical. Look up recipes for Breakfast Stout. I recently had a commercial version that added coffee too. It was certainly a complete breakfast.

My latest brew was a sweet stout with about 10% oatmeal and a similar amount of lactose. I only just bottled it a week ago so I can't say whether it's any good. But I had a sip when bottling and it was pretty promising
