1 hop beers?

Wed Aug 12, 2009 7:55 pm

So I was checking my fridge and found that I have 4oz of Summit, 5 oz of Northern Brewer, and 4oz of of EKG.

I'm debating if I want to stop by the LBHS and pick up some more hops or if I should make a single hopped beer. I have a WLP001 starter on the stirplate so I don't really want to use the EKG (I'll wait for an English beer).

does anyone have experience with using either Summit or NB exclusively?

I'm not a big fan of Summit hops when used in large amounts. I would use the Northern Brewer for bittering and Summit for flavor and aroma additions.

I just brewed an all Summit IPA last weekend. Every time I take a gravity reading I'm getting a strong tangerine/grapefruit flavor and aroma. Total used was 4oz.

I'm thinking it'll be pretty damn good.

was it the Sly Fox show where they would make a single hop IPA each month for 11 months and then make a monster IPA with all 11 varieties....i know i didn't imagine this i just can't remember the show...either way, i'm a fan of trying the SMaSH beers. Single Malt and Single Hop

Love SMaSH beers. Really get to see what ingredients do. I got a Munich and Northern Brewer in primary.

Nothing wrong with single hopped beers as long as every characteristic is pleasing. Tasting uses mostly NB for Janet's Brown, I believe he uses a small amount of cascade towards the end.

I've never done a SMaSH .. well not when knowing what that was (I've done 2row cascade and honey before) and I'm looking forward to doing just that, seeing what ONE hop will taste like. Summit is what I'm thinking right now or something else high alpha. 've got Tomahawk, Summit, Simcoe, Warrior to work with. It'll be really cool to just say "OH that one is summit it tastes like ... " and not "oh thats hoppy and has this and that taste". I think this will be my next brew. Lots of pale malt and a good amount of summit.

10 gallon batch:
18 lbs. of Pale Ale malt
5 lbs. Munich
2 lbs. Crystal 40
1 lb. of Carapils

If I brew again, I may go with regular 2-row malt for base grain. Just to ease up on the kilned malts. Then again, if it's good, I may not.
