Rice Hulls

Sat Jul 25, 2009 11:32 am

I'm planning to do a Hefe that has 60% malted wheat and 40% pilsner in a 5 gallon batch. Given I'll be over the 50% wheat threshold, I want to add rice hulls to the mash to help with lautering.

Can anyone give me a rule of thumb for amount of rice hulls (by weight) I should be adding in?

Thanks!

Randy Mosher always says to throw in "a couple of handfulls". For that much wheat I would use a pound.

For a 5-6 gallon batch I dont need more than .5 lb of rice hulls for a recipe like that with my system. Half a pound of rice hulls is a lot.

I'll try less next time.

A pound wont hurt and there is nothing wrong with the safe side either.

I always toss a couple of handfuls in my mash whether it needs it or not. Can't remember the last time I had a stuck sparg. The last dunkelweissen I did (attempt at Dan Gordon's recipe) was about 80% wheat of various types. I think I used about a third of a pound of rice hulls and noticed no slowing of the sparge at all.

I have been told to use the same volume of rice hulls as adjunct. For instance, if 5lbs of wheat malt fills a 1 gallon ziploc bag, then you would use a 1 gallon bag of rice hulls, which is about a pound. This seems logical and works for me.
