Dry hopping with pellets

Sat Jun 17, 2006 8:44 am

I want to make a recipe that calls for dry hopping but alas my LHBS had no plugs or whole hops the recipe called for but they had pellets. I've read these can be used for dry hopping but some people say use more pellets cause they have less volotile oils than whole. Others say they have more than whole cause they are compressed. can someone clarify this for me please? also alot say add them straight to the wort some say use a stocking to keep fine particles from getting in your final brew. Is this a problem? wouldn't they dissolve and float to the bottom while the carboy sits for another week? I don't want to end up with a gritty beer because particles of hop pellets are floating in it. Thanx in advance.

I dont know about the part about using more or less pellets when compared to whole leaf but i would think you would use less pellets because the oils are better preserved when the hop is in pellet form. As far as using a nylon to hold the hops in i would say definately do it. It just saves a lot of headache later on.

Better yet just try both methods and let us all know what you find out. I'm dry hopping with whole flower and using twice as much as the recipe calls for. (I'm pulling a Justin.) I am using a store bought hop bag but could have just as easily used a stocking. I would think that the particles that you're worried about would just settle out and not show up in your finished beer. Don't worry have a homebrew.

Ok in my experience use the bag... the finer the mesh the better, that shit just does not like to settle and unless you filter you will get SOME in your beer, alot? perhaps no but some. Pellets have more goodies by 5-10% or so.

I dry hop with pellets all the time. After a couple weeks in the secondary I transfer to another carboy. I let that sit overnight to let any hops or other stuff settle out and then bottle or keg.

way back in the day when I bottled, I'd dry hop with pellets and no bag. I'd siphon like normal into the bottling bucket and never had a problem with hops getting into my bottles.

I dry hop with pellets for most beers, if the hops have not all dropped in 10 - 14 days I chill the fermenter (usually overnight) in my 60qt Ice Cube cooler with (2) 2-Liter frozen soda bottles. The ambient temp in the cooler is about 58f and the hops have all pretty much fallen.

I was also planning on dry hopping my Double IPA (O.G. 1.101) and was wondering if half a package of Brew King chitosan #4 would help remove the hops or since I was planning on letting it go in the secondary for a few weeks (maybe a month). Any thoughts?
