brewing with peanuts/peanut butter

Thu Nov 06, 2008 4:07 pm

I want to try an experimental brew, a peanut buttercup porter. I was wondering if anyone has used peanuts or peanut better in a beer. Any experiences out there? Advice would be great!

I would suggest Powdered Peanut Butter. ChrisKennedy did a chocolate peanut butter beer a while back and had pretty good results. Seems to be the easiest way to get nuts in your beer.

That's not the way that JP gets nuts in his beer.... :o

But I think BadRock's suggestion might be a little more reliable. JP's method involves loitering around in a men's room, and usually doesn't end well...

Has anyone used the powdered PB? If so, how much did you use for 5 gal., and who wants to split a 4 pack of it with me if you don't need more than one jar?

I brewed a chocolate peanut butter porter last year. Basically a Young's Double Chocolate Stout recipe from BYO, with a jar of organic peanut butter (de-oiled) thrown in. I'll never do that again. Very little PB taste, although there was some PB bitterness there. Just a bad idea IMHO, unless you really like sweet stouts. A keg full was too much for me. Might be better with other types of PB.
