Jamil's American Stout recipe

I get a 7-8 ibu difference between the recipe and Beersmith. Can anybody else confirm this?

I have.
You're right... mine also comes out at 30.3 IBU with two oz of EKG 5% Alpha hops and not the 41 as Jamil writes in the book.

Hmmmm, that must be the Dry Stout recipe. Try the American Stout, IBUs in the 70s. But I'll have to find the recipe you did.

Well the American Stout also came out a "little" low in my BeerSmith; 49 IBU with a 23L Batch size.

I seem to remember Jamil talking about the different results brewers can get whils using each others recipes and how to correct for them... But I just can't quit remember what show it was on. Have you tried asking him himself what to do?

The IBU numbers in Beersmith will change as you change your efficiency. The book assumes 7 gallons at the start of the boil with a 15% loss to evaporation, 5.5 gallons into the fermenter. I don't believe Jamil says what efficiency he has. Your numbers may vary, but when I use a recipe from the book I adjust it to hit the IBU and gravity numbers based on my system. I use the recipe's weights and measures as a guide.
