The "Pliny Lite" is my Pliny The Elder recipe from the Maltose Falcons website scaled down to 1.056 OG and 38 IBUs and no sugar (or DME since I can mash all the grain I need to get this OG). I left the dry hop quantities the same.

The recipe is very much still under development. When it's finished, I'll post it. I re-brewed it for the second round making it a little more balanced for flyover country (I'm originally from IL) by upping the mash temp. This is the version I'll be pouring this weekend. I've got other changes I'll be trying as long as I have the hops.

Vinnie Cilurzo is brewing this recipe as our entry into the 2008 GABF ProAm. I expect he'll have some changes after he brews the pilot batch later this month. I'd hope to include those in my recipe.

Sorry if it seems like I'm hedging here. I just don't want to get more than one version out there. When I develop a recipe, it's not an exercise in Promash but in brewing. It can take up to 8 or 9 iterations.

I brew every beer with the same water. I take RO water and bump it up to Ca-110ppm, Mg-118ppm, Na-17ppm, SO4-350ppm, Cl-50ppm. I started doing this 8 years ago and today I can't tell you the rational. Palmer offered to look at it for me but I've never taken him up on it. I should.

Thanks, Mike!

Take your time in perfecting this thing, so by the time you are ready to share the recipe, the hops will be available again!

I have been getting my hops from about three different sources, and have been trying to get enough for 2 Pliny batches. So far, so good.

Also, I have been messing with different hops with "small IPAs" - (1.052-1.060) my favorite so far has been Chinook flavor, aroma, and then centennial with chinook as dry hops. Does Columbus have a similar profile to Chinook? I just realized I might have some extra columbus lying around...

Thanks again, Mike, and good luck - I was bummed to miss the anniversary party and all that great beer...

Tasty-
Thanks for the chance to taste your APA and IPAs at the Anniversary party. I was more than happy to find that there was some IPA left later in the evening, after this station was supposed to be "closed".
Good luck with the rest of your recipe developement, but I think you are close to your goal.

I left that keg of IPA connected intentionally. Glad you found it.

The recipe for that beer (a Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale clone) is discussed on Jamil's IPA show. If anyone wants the promash file, PM me. It's a Chinook/Centennial/Cascade beer that's a ruby red.

Re: McDole's pliny light recipe?

I had a beer at Russian River on Monday called "Happy Hops" I wonder if this was one of the pilot batches for Pliny light? It was delicious.

Cool to see all of the interest in low alcohol hop forward beers. Amplified pale ales...

Hey - now that we have some updated info on the break-up betwen Vinnie and Tasty, and that Sully is doing this brew - is the recipe ready for posting?

Curious... :crazybitch:

Tasty - Have you had a chance to post the recipe? Based on all the reviews, I'd love to get my hands on it!
