Exploding Carboys!!!!!!!!

Tue Mar 25, 2008 12:12 pm

I've got to share a near death experience I just went through... I was in the process of cleaning one of my carboys just like I've done hundreds of times. I had the carboy in the sink, dumped in some PBW and started filling it up. I stuck the spray nozzle into the carboy and went into the garage to get something. While messing around in the garage I heard a sound that sounded like a sonic boom. Ran into the untility room and my carboy literally exploded sending large pieces of glass in all directions! I spent the next two hours pulling glass out of all 4 walls and the celling. I even found glass in the living room which is a good 50' from ground zero. I don't even what to think what would of happened if I was in the same room when this bomb went off!

What appeared to happen was the spay nozzle slipped into the carboy and formed a seal. Pressure built up from the PBW and caused the carboy to explode.

Note to brewer: ALWAYS vent when using PBW!

I'm glad that you're ok and no one was in harms way!

Thanks for the warning. I often do the same thing with a spray nozzle and PBW in my carboy. I'll know now to keep a close eye on it.
I think I've had about enough beer tonight...Now I need some Whiskey to sober up
