Hops used in Guiness??

Are hops used in brewing Guiness? In what amount? Which beers have the largest quantity of hops? I see ads on TV for Sam Adams claiming they use more hops than others. It that true? Do all varieties of Sam Adams beer use the same amount of hops? Thanks for your help.

Yes, they use hops in Guinness.

The amount and TYPE of hops as well as the amount of time they spend in the boil all contribute to the bitterness, flavor and aroma of the end beer.
These factors vary from beer to beer and style to style.

Some styles of beer contain very few hops. Others, like IIPA contain insane amounts of hops (on the order of 5 or 6 lbs per barrel). Usually those are citrusy American hops in an IPA or an American Pale Ale like Sierra Nevada or Mirror Pond. Sam Adams Boston Lager uses German Noble hops, which are spicy and lighter in flavor and aroma.
English/Irish/Scottish beers use British hops and those tend to be earthy.

Target and Goldings as with most ales this may change with availability and market prices (I expect the target will stay the same though as they are cheap, widely produced and disease resistant).

I've read sources claiming 45 IBUs, this seems a little high to me.

i saw a post somewhere from jamil about how you can burr grind your roasted barley and it gives it a bit of a tart flavor or tangyness from the astringency. it was either here or on the more beer forums.

Or you can sour 3% by volume, pasteurize it and add it back in.

Reipe is:
12 oz roasted barley
4 oz 55 L Crystal Malt Steep for 30 minutes @ 150-153 degrees F
24 oz flaked barley
6 # Lite DME
1 oz EKG @ 4% -60 min
8 oz malto-dextrin powder
1 tsp. Irish Moss
WLP004 Irish Ale Yeast
2 TBSP Lactic acid at bottling!
Primary 1 week @ 68 degrees F
Secondary: 1 week @ 66-68 degrees F
3/4 c. corn sugar for priming -bottles
