Malta Goya

Mon Feb 25, 2008 9:12 am

Okay, I know it isn't really a beer, but has anyone tried this? It is basically sweetened, unhopped, unfermented wort. To me, it tasted like I was pouring syrup down my throat. It was just too sweet. I had to dump it.

Haven't tried it, but I have heard of some people using it for starter wort.

Compared to most sodapops I like it just fine. I used to drink it as a sort of energy drink on the way to baseball games in the days before we had energy drinks.

I fermented a 6pack of it once and it made a passable scottish ale.

Will give you a 1.060 gravity, so dilute to your desired starter gravity...1.030-1.040

Aw, come on, meister... you know you love it. I think there is a recipe for it in The Homebrewers Companion. I took a few large samples from my last three worts (czech pils, comm scottish, jz's kolsch) to check for OG. They were pretty tasty, so I finished them. I guess it's not really the same as malta - which as you said - is unhopped. Of the three, the highest OG was the pils at 1.053. I can't imagine liking the taste of an unhopped 1.060.

NOT unhopped. Here are the ingredients of Mata Goya:
Water, pure malt, caramel malt, high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, caramel color, phosphoric acid, salt and hops

There are other Malta drinks out there, too. Malta Hatuey has Caramel Malt, Mello Malt, Frutose, Corn Syrup, Hops. Note presence of hops again.

WTF is mello malt?

It is simply malted mellos. I don't know where you can find the plain mellos for malting. The variety that grows in swampy areas are pretty easy to fine. They are generally called marshmellos.
