Problem solved. Four things going on.
I reorientated the pump head to have intake down and output up. Others had told me that I needed a bleeder valve on the output side. Luckily one of my ball valves has a little bleeder outlet built into it. I always wondered what that was for! Also, I was trying to pump into my BK from the bottom port which will not work. I took a longer hose and hung it over the top into the BK and it works fine.
Finally, you have to gently crack the output ball valve on the pump to start the flow. Thanks for everyone's input.

 the bleed valve replaces most of the old waffle i was spouting for priming the pump. Very useful 8)
