I don't know... just to be safe I have a general rule when dealing with cops... I stick with "Yes, sir/ma'am."

I think it's funny how people think of skateboarding as breaking the law. I'm sorry this just hit a little close to home. I used to skate, in my much younger days, and remember getting harassed quite a few times. It never ended in violence probably since I just moved along but skateboarding is not a crime. I guess trespassing is and that's what I heard a lot even if there was no one around to bother or call complaining. All it took was a cop to decide you don't belong there.

Skateboarding ordinances are ridiculous. I think city officials that think skateboarders pose a threat to the safety and well being of the general population or very misguided. Automobiles pose more of a safety threat than skateboards. I don't blame the cop, because he is just doing his job, but I do blame the authoritarian principles of the legislators. The skateboard ordinances shouldn't be a law anyways. The police should be arresting rapists and murderers.

Sadly, the law is just another case of government scapegoating, but who cares? If it's popular and gets them votes then that is what they should do right? Who cares if they are wrongly misleading the public by creating a scapegoat, it gets them votes, doesn't it?

Umm, ya might reserve a little blame for those knowingly breaking the law. I happen to think open container laws are ridiculous. Drunken driving should be illegal, drinking in a car should not be. If I ever get pulled over and have an outlaw beverage I'm gonna tell the officer: "That's most expensive beer I've had all day!". I'll pay my fine and life will go on. I'm not going to argue that the law is ridiculous because the cop does not care what I think, only what I do. That same cop may stop at the Quicky Mart and grab a tall boy for the road. Fine with me. It's like Baretta used to say before he blew his wife's head off.................

If I'm downtown and there are a bunch of 16-20 year olds skateboarding on the sidewalk, I'll go around them. Maybe that means cross the street, whatever - the poor business owner takes it in the ass on that one.

The other thing is this - if some skateboarder falls down and breaks his precious little head, mommy and daddy are going to sue the city for every cent because they let kids skateboard on sidewalks even though it was dangerous. Thank lawyers for that one.

You could make the same argument with automobiles, eating McDonalds, etc.

The fact is the government is meant to protect person A from person B, not person A from person A. A person assumes the risk if they ride a skateboard, car, etc. If they fall it's their own damn fault.

You're mistaken - if a kid falls on a city sidewalk the city will end up paying. It's all about dollars and cents - rather than trying to move kids along all the time, a municipality will enact a blanket ordinance. Schools in my area have placed blocks on the railings and curbs so skateboarders won't do stunts, fall and sue the school district.

But we're going off topic here. There was a mob of teenagers riding skateboards, deliberately flouting the law. And they were mouthy and trying to stir up trouble. They did, they paid and now on one is happy about it, most likely not even the cop.

If my kid was involved in that I'd make him watch me sledgehammer his skateboard.
