Jamil's California Common mash temp?

Sun Jan 20, 2008 9:19 am

I just caught The Jamil Show's California Common episode. Of course, it was after I'd already brewed this style.

My recipe was based off Jamil's Brewing Classic Styles book and he recommended a 150 F mash temp. However, the radio show said 154 F. Anyone know why there's a discrepancy? Sounded like the same ingredients were listed in both sources.

Go with the book. I've tweaked and adjusted the recipes here and there to be certain that the book version was the one I thought was the best of all versions. This included rebrewing and doing taste tests. Over time, I'll continue to tweak things here and there, though I doubt there will be any major changes. In general, if the show was prior to May 2007, go with the book. If the show was recorded after May 2007, go with the show.

I've also started posting corrections for the book at this site:

I hope my post helped in some way. If not, please feel free to contact me.

Thanks Jamil.

Gotta tell ya, when I opened the fermenter lid to pitch (had to pop it in the fridge to get appropriate temp), it smelled fantastic. A bit like that famous Cal Common example...

This will probably be my best batch yet.

Thanks for a book full of kick ass recipes.
