I was kind of wondering about the heat issues. I don't use keggles so I don't know how much heat will get to them, but that is my only real question.

OK, I LIKE the site glass idea. I have a problem i am concerned about that is stopping me from going out and getting mine right now. How does the sight glass get sanitized? With all the fittings and what not, I would be concerned.

Other than that, great idea.

I just put a sight glass and thermo on my HLT. I bought it from a guy for like $20. It came with a stainless elbow (1/2" MPT X 1/2" comp.), a 17" pyrex glass tube, 2 O rings and a stainless eye bolt to secure the top. I think he now sells them regularly on eBay.

I dig it. I have a gravity system and now I never have to climb up to the top to see how much water I have left, and stick my arm down in there to check the temp. I do have to be very careful because it is glass - but it basically lives up on the top of the sculpture.

I think one on the brew kettle is might be extraneous, IMHO. I have a copper pipe that I marked to gauge volume. I would be worried about sanitation too. The inside of that sight glass is not going to get hot enough to kill things so you will have to spray some star san down there.

Congrats on the brew job, Crut!

Crut,

Nice job on the setup. You're going to want a heat shield for the sight glass. I fired up my new keggle on Monday and the plastic NB sight glass (weldless fitting & racking cane) got all melty. I put a piece of sheet metal between the keggle and the burner ring just under the sight glass and it worked fine.

I was about to add a second sight glass to my brew kettle (wanted to see how it worked on the keggle first) and I've decided not to thanks to this thread. For sale, weldless sight glass, cheap.

Cheers,

HMMMM..I've had sight glasses on my other keggles in the past, the weldless one that B3 sells, it's a hard plastic tubing and never had one melt on me. Not saying that it can't, guess it depends on how far up the keg you mount it. The only one I have a sight glass on right now is my boil kettle, and it's worked fine in the 2 brews I've done so far. Might have to look at McMaster Carr and see if they have one similiar, I have a spot on my T where I can run one, where my thermowell is located, but think I would want and run some type of ridgid plastic tubing.

Since i hav'nt run it at full temp yet, just really hot tap water, i dont know of its performance yet, but if the brew gods are nice to me, ill be using it this weekend.
Beer bear: On the keggle, the bottom lip/skirt kind of collects the heat and disperses it out of holes in it. When i had my fitting welded in I made sure it wasn't near one of these so i don't think heat should be too much of a problem.
Sean: I just plan to run some PBW through the SG and give it a quick run through with my dip tube cleaner brush, then run star san or Iodaphor through it, should be all thats needed.
The reason I wanted to do site gauges was that i didn't want to have to rely on a piece of pipe for measuring that i had to stick in and sanitize each time i wanted to measure. This way I can just glance at it (hopefully) and be able to tell how much i have instantly. That and when it gets boiling, its tough to se how much is in there boiling (i know approx how much in my mind). The only other thing i want to add to my HLT is another 1/2 welded fitting so i can thread a thermo into it.
At TBC we use the vinyl tubing for our HLT and MT, and it seems to be holing up fine. Yeah it gets a little soft when it gets warmed up, but I have never seen it give out or anything. The true test is going to be the SG on the boil kettle. I have a couple old broken racking canes i can attach to it if the hose fails.

Will keep everyone posted on how it works.

Just get yourself a cast stainless "T" from B3. Then you can put the thermo and the sight glass in the same welded fitting.
