Which fridge for a kegerator?

Sun Jan 15, 2006 3:05 pm

I finally got the go ahead from the wife to get a small fridge so I can start kegging. (and there was much rejoicing) So, here's my requirements. I'd like to get a small fridge, but it needs to be big enough for two corny kegs and a co2 tank. I'd also like to be able to remove the cornys and put in a 6.5gal carboy to do lagers. Eventually, I'll want to drill a hole in the top and mount a tap stand. I've found a lot of websites detailing the building of kegerators, but haven't found any that point out exactly what model fridge to get, or what interior capacity I need in order to do this. Any suggestions?

Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza.

He's got a point! You can't beat that chest freezer for it's ability to turn into one snappy kegerator. Several of the guys here have made their own by constructing a wooden collar which is fitted inbetween the lid and the main box. That's where all of your add on equipment like taps and tubing will pass thru. By far it's the best way to go. Now on the other hand hauling a full carboy out of that thing could present a problem if your back isn't up to par. That about the only downside.

I second the chest freezer, get a 7 foot one, and have 2 kegs and a carboy along with a 20lb CO2 tank.... at least I assume you could fit that much, I have a 12 foot and can fit 4 kegs and a carboy with plenty of room

Yeah, my problem is I have about 3 feet of space to put whatever I get, so a 7 foot chest freezer is right out. I'm hoping to pick up the Sanyo some time soon. It's just been difficult to get out and look for one lately. If we ever move into a larger house, or a house with a garage or something, then I'll go the chest freezer route, but as it is, I'm having to give a chair to GoodWill just to have room for a small dorm fridge.

I am now the proud owner of a Sanyo 4912 (w00t!) It's got a really nice Double IPA in it currently. Justin (or anyone else) can you go over that method of carbonating where you shake the keg for a while and it carbs really quick?

take keg.. put CO2 on beer out tap (or gas in... either way)
set regulator to like 30psi
shake the piss outa it till it stops adding co2
chill
wait 1-2 days
put co2 on gas sid at appropriate pressure for the temp
serve
YMMV
