Hose-braid for mash tun question

Wed Aug 01, 2007 10:23 am

So, I'm looking into building another mash tun and using Denny Conn's suggestion of the hose braid in the rectangular picnic cooler...

My question (and I'm not "handy" so if this is stupid, I apologize)...if you use a toilet supply line...how does the wort get out? My toilet supply line doesn't leak so I'm wondering how the wort gets out from the hose braid design? Is there a way you loosen the braids to let the wort get out?

Sorry for the stupid question...

Ok when using the toilet supply line route. You take the original line cut the ends off of the supply line. Then carefully extract the inner hose from the braid leaving it empty. Fold one end of the braid over 3 or four times and crimp it with pliers. The other end goes on what ever you are using to get to the outside of your cooler. You do not need to spread the braid once set up like this it will work just fine as is.

Thanks and cheers,

Try to get STAINLESS STEEL braid not aluminum.

Thanks for the tip. I'm not sure I would have paid attention to that detail...

...or plastic for that matter. Around here most of the toilet supply lines have a gray plastic braid on them. Have to go hunting to find honest-to-goodness metal braid

I had no problem finding a SS hose braid from any local hardware store.. I went with the 20" length, and a 50qt cooler. Worked GREAT!

To avoid your SS braid to collapse under your grain bed, you can insert a copper wire (turned around a pencil or something to make it looks like a coil).
