English Amber Ale???

I'm drinking something called Black Dog Ale from spanish peaks brewing company... I really like it...

Another similar beer that I love is Manitou Amber Ale from the Traverse City brewing company in WIlliamsberg michigan...

Both are described as an english style amber ale, but I can't really find a match in the bcjp or in my brewing program...

Is it just a pale ale, bitter, esb???

Or just confirm my inexperienced opinion that an English Style Amber is really in category 8B Special/Best/Premium bitter?

You are almost certainly correct. Seems that Americans freak out about any beer labeled as "Bitter" (even if that is the correct name) and won't buy it.

Anyway, rename the same beer as an "english amber" and you'll likely sell 10x as much.

I just poured myself a glass of Black Dog a few minutes ago. I too really like it. Almost immediately I began considering brewing something like this. It is indeed a nice English bitter. It's a style I haven't brewed yet so it is going near the top of my list of beers to brew next.

If it helps with the recipe, on their website they give the following information:

Malts: Munich, caramel 40, caramel 80, choclate
Hops: Centennial, Northern Brewer, Chinnok
IBU: 36
OG: 13.2 (I'm assuming plato??)
