Wort chiller in my mash tun

Tue Feb 20, 2007 5:32 am

I want to use a wort chiller to raise the temperature of my mash. Pump hot water through it from my brew kettle using a pump. Has anyone tried this before? Thanks for your help.

Yes, I've brewed with a friend of mine that does this. It's basicly a HRMS system. I think this is the right style, but anyway, it does work. Though I think it could cause some scortching in the imidiate area of the grains.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Well, it's similar. With HERMS, you're recirculating your mash through a heat exchanger, so it has a similar effect as to controling mash temp, but you get the added bonus of constantly filtering through the grain bed.

Wow, it almost sounds like I know what I'm talking about...

Yep... it will work just fine. However you may want to consider putting the wort chiller in your kettle (or HLT) and pumping your mash through it to gain the aforementioned benefits of filtering. IMHO it also gives you a more even overall mash temperature; the other way you should seriously consider stirring your mash.

I'm w/ Push E.

It seems that if you don't constantly stir your mash it would only change the temp near the heat exchanger.

Follow Push's advice and you have yourself a HERMS system.
