quick disconnects

Thu Feb 08, 2007 8:06 pm

Anyone have any suggestions on quick disconnets. I build my system about 18 months ago with quick disconnets from lowes. They suck. The leak and get air in my pump and cause it to cavataite. I was looking at the ones at B3. Does anyone know if they will do the same thing? Should I hard pipe it or what?

Cheers!!

I will refrain, but be fair warned.

I seem to recall seeing cheap polysuphone QDs on MiniBrew's website.

I'm interested inthe answer to this one as well, been thinking about upgrading to good silicon tubing and some proper QDs

What about decent quality brass "hose" fittings??

I've found that the "brass" (not sure that's really what they are) will still rust over time. At least mine did. Also, the ones that "seal" when disconnected tended to seal even when connected, so I ditched 'em.

Now I'm (slowly) upgrading to the CPC quick disconnects. They are expensive, but they'll last a lot longer.

I've used Brass QD'S for years now. just make sure that the steel ball locks and any rings on them are stainless. I got them from a surplus store. They were designed for garden hose.
They havent rusted or leaked.
I love them!!

I've been happy with the CPC QDs. My only gripe is that when I recirc, every once in a while some grain or hops will get caught on the cross inside and plug the line over time. I saw a thread on the B3 forum on cutting them out, but I haven't tried yet.

I've been using brass garden hose disconnects for a little while and am chaning to the plastic variety for a couple of reasons.

Brass ones, while looking all nice and groovy and all, get bloody hot when you are recirculating. I've scolded my hands quite badly on numerous occasions. :x

They also have a little rubber o-ring that is used to seal them properly which perishes rather too quickly when you connect/disconnect when the buggers are hot.

I've got a couple of plastic disconnects on one hose as a test and love it. No more burnt hands and the rubber o-rings appear to be fine. I did have one female disconnect that was a self-sealing one which woked well in principal but restricted the wort flow to a trickle. Ripped the sealing thingie out of it and it now works a treat.
