Morebeer Milled Grains

Sat Feb 08, 2014 7:46 pm

I was going to make an order from Morebeer, since they have super fast shipping now that they have the PA location. and I noticed that they had 1lb of roasted barley in unmilled but they were sold out of milled 1lb. This seriously confused me since why can't they just mill a pound of the unmilled stuff and send it out. So i emailed them to find out why and it turns out they pre-mill and package all their grains.

Maybe it is not a big deal with the turnover they have but def concerns me that they have milled grain sitting around for who knows how long before it is sent to me? Since milled grain will go stale relatively quickly.. Is this how a lot of shops do it?

Looks like I may need to invest in a mill soon...

Large mail order companies with a quick turn-around, yes. But it also means it's moving quickly enough that you shouldn't have to worry about it going stale on you. Having your own mill is still a good idea.

If they are milling and packaging in sealed plastic right away, it's less of a concern than if you mill it into a paper sack and let it sit around for weeks.

Yes I too have had this argument with them before. I like to buy all my grains unmilled. I ordered one of the kits from them and all my specialty grains were milled... It was pretty irritating because I had selected for it to be unmilled (apparently that's only the base grain there). I just only buy equipment from them. I avoid pretty much all grains from them now.

I've also had pre-milled specialty grains sent which I really don't like. I went ahead and got grain mill and motorized it, and always make sure I get unmilled grains...even if I have to source supplies from multiple sources..
