I have the 30L speidel and I love it. The plastic is very thick and extremely smooth on the inside. The spigot is offset from center, so you can rotate it if you want it to pull liquid from a little higher up in the fermenter, or rotate it so it pulls from lower to remove break material before pitching. The airlock it comes with is very large and for a 5.5 gallon batch there is a large amount of head space, so no blowoff tube required unless maybe doing a big belgian or barleywine.I can get my whole arm into it for cleaning, and you can choose not to use a spigot if you so desire because it comes with a sealed cap to put in place of the spigot if you want.

And you can close the fermenter completely so you can invert it and rock it sideways for aeration, and you can invert it for dry hopping. Buy a 30 as primary and 20 as secondary.

Just curious, those using the Speidel, are you transferring the beer to a keg (or bottling bucket) via the valve or still using some sort of syphon? If your using a valve, how are you keeping it clean/sanitized for the 1-3 weeks of fermentation?

Just bought one of these and am excited to give this thing a shot..

Thanks in advance

I too am looking to purchase a couple of these in the 60L size. What's the best way to go about sanitzing these guys? I really don't want to fill the thing with 15gal of sanitizer then have to dump all that water. Any ideas?

Also is the spigot high enough where you leave behind yeast, trub etc.?

What about dry hopping? When the hops settle to the bottom will the spigot clear that bed of hops?

Thanks

I might get me one of these, the price isn't as high as I though it would be.

Too bad they're out of stock, that's ok I'm out of money

I have a 30L speidel and it's my go to. Be warned, my spigot leaked regardless of any changes I made in the use of the gasket and/or gaskets! On another forum a lot of guys stated the same. The fix for me, as some others, was to take the solid threaded cap and drill a hole to fit a spigot. I used a plastic, chi-comm POS bucket spigot and of course it wore out and led to a beer/yeast shower so I now use a SS spigot made by SS Brewing Technologies for their Brew Bucket. Nice. Anway, the spigot in any fashion sits high enough to not bring out a bunch of trub tho the highest OG brew I've done in it is 061. Easy to clean and fully sanitize. The cartoonishly oversized air lock is actually very nice and with the oversized thing sitting on top of over 7 gallons of fermenter your 5 or 5.5 gallon batch should be fine, even a monster...

As for me I like it. I'd give it a 9 out of 10 but with the poorly designed spigot that gives SOME NOT ALL a problem I give it an 8.

How do you guys that have had the Speidels for a while now like them? Do you use paper towel or a really soft sponge to clean them or just a hot soak in PBW?

Are there cleaning instructions from Speidel posted anywhere? Cleaning the spigot seems like it would be a pain, but I dont know if you just keep opening and closing it to clean it. Ball valves can get nasty if they arent flushed properly.

Love mine. I clean with oxyclean hot soak overnight then scrub with a micrifiber towel. I dont use the spigot.
