Have you tried the Home Beer Wine and Cheese Shop in Woodland Hills?

Mr. Beer is the crack cocaine of homebrewing.
A lot of people on this board started with one. (I started with a Mr. Beer kit back in 2002.)

You can actually get some decent beer out of a Mr. Beer kit if you disregard some of the Mr. Beer instructions
and go with these that I posted on the RealBeer.com forum several years ago:

(Note that I heard that now Mr. Beer kits now may come with Wyeast smack packs. If so, that's an awesome yeast so it's more than ok to use that if its in your kit).

Good luck and hope this helps-

If crack is your gateway drug, I'm worried about what you've moved on to from there...

Welcome to both Brewing and So CA! I started off with the low end starter setup from Midwest Brewing Supplies, but I have been making most all of my equipment since then. Fortunately I live less than 5 miles from More Beer and a mile from a Soon to be opened brew pub that has a small homebrew selection in their store front.

Biggest advice I can offer is get a spare fridge for the Summer months, or don't plan on brewing much because of the heat. I lost a Sweet Oatmeal Stout last Summer. Then got a donated fridge and haven't looked back since.
