Bottling Hydrometer price disparity?

Mon Sep 03, 2012 5:43 pm

I was perusing Williams "custom" line of Hydrometers and was close to buying a couple, not, for me so much as my brew partner, I can't read the damn things. I was surprised to see how inexpensive they were and that kind of set of an alarm. An alarm that screams something in the order of you get what you pay for! Looking around landed me at C.E. Krause where they have similar hydrometers for around 29 bucks, almost twice what Williams was selling them for. I also noticed the comments about fragility and care in handling. The one I have now is really pretty sturdy. So, already long story short, anyone have any experience with either, and, are the actually the same hydrometer or is one higher quality and so demands double the price?

Cheers
Scott

Always buy two hydrometers. If you only get one, you will soon break it (usually early in the brew session). If you get two, you won't break one for years, making you wonder why the hell you bothered to get two. Of course if you break one of the two, you will break the second one within a couple weeks.
I've done plenty of research on this phenomenon during my own brewing. 8)

My first one was faulty (wasn't fully sealed at the top) and got wet inside after a few uses. The one I got to replace it lasted nearly 5 years... until my last batch.
