I experienced the opposite. Living in Oregon drive you to the good beers, then the question arose; "Can I make this at home?".

1,000's of dollars later :)

This is not a hobby where you save money.

Steve,

Speaking of NHC tickets, I intend to track you down and make you pay for not meeting me in Seattle all those years ago. Philly will set me back $3k in airfares alone, I love my hobby and those douche bags that make it even better. Just sayin'

It will be an honor to tip a pint or 15 with you in Philly, you bastard.

The only way to come ahead in this is to make a lot of beer over a long period...I know I have spent quite a bit on this hobby...but man I bought 2 six packs at the bottle store and spent what i pay for 5 gallons..if I drank(or shared) as much commercial beer as homebrew...it would def cost more...

Yeah, you can say to yourself "oh I just brewed two and half cases for under $50" but when you start to do the math, this hobby is pricey. I just think about the amount of tin foil I use when making a batch. All that little stuff adds up. Sanitizer, paper towels, instruments, propane.... on and on. Love it though. Worth every dime.

Just think about the $50 you saved by NOT buying the Mr. Beer kit!
