Favorite Mash Tun Design?

Wed Aug 24, 2011 9:44 pm

Want to do some upgrades. Want more than my cooler, but my Minibrew plastic MLT is not cutting it, which is sad given the $ I have put into it.

Has anyone used the Blichmann with their Louvered False bottom design? Do you like it?

What about the Megapots and their standard perforated stainless false bottoms?

Chime in and tell me what you use and like the best.

Keep in mind, I pump continuously through a RIMS system so stuck sparges SUCK!

I love my 52 quart rectangular cooler with the loop of stainless steel braid.

Does anyone have or used the Blichmann Boilermaker with false bottom as a mash tun? What do you think? Stuck sparges? Slow drain? Large pump flows have any effect on grain compaction? Thanks!

I bought a 20 gallon Update Stainless pot from instawares for $144 and hired a local guy to weld some couplings. The Update pots are the ones used by Northern Brewer, so a Northern brewer false bottom fit. I love it.

48 qt. cooler with a sing;le line of hose braid. It's worked flawlessly for 405 batches so far....

Lookin' good Denny!
Here's mine. Same thing, I even have a cute little automatic mash rake. Thats the first I've used it, though.
Lookin at about 40 batches, so far. No complaints!

I have the hobby beverage mash tun. I get over 80% efficiency and I sparge faster than most of the local brewers. I want a larger mash tun and kettle but I do want to brew just about daily and ferment a very controlled ferment but I hate kegging or bottling.

Btw I just did a english barley wine with 21 lbs 4 oz of malt and got 23.4 Plato at preboil gravity. I watered it down and adjusted the hops to fit

I use the 15g Boilermaker with the Blichmann false bottom. I really like it as a MLT. I do a direct fire recirc during the mash and have never had a problem with stuck sparges or slow drains. I have noticed that if I run the pump wide open I do get some grain bed compaction. Overall a great pot. If I had one complaint it would be that I don't like the one ply bottom. It's a little to flimsy for a pot that cost so much. The only other issue is the $$$$. $500 for the 20g size with the false bottom.
