Big starter vessel

Sun May 01, 2011 8:40 am

I started brewing lagers and am trying to figure out what to make my starter in.

I make ~10 gallon batches.

I bought a 1 gallon glass growler and ended up losing half my starter yeast to blow off.

I think I want something glass 1.5 to 2 gallons.

Does anyone have an recomendations?

Thanks!

Brew a 3 - 5 gallon batch, and harvest that yeast for the 10 gallon batch. I just did that, and the yeast slurry volume worked out almost perfectly (using mr malty calculator).

Any suggestions about vessels? I would rather not brew a special small batch to grow yeast.......

You need some of this in your starter.

I started using this stuff two years ago and haven't had any blowoff since.
