Connecting Banjo Burner to Black Pipe

Thu Mar 31, 2011 8:11 am

Ok, I'm at a loss. Several trips to the Home Depot and I still can't figure out what fittings I need.

Here's the situation... I have a Banjo Burner (12") which has a 1/4" FPT that I need to connect to a 3/8" FPT black iron elbow (it's a 3/8" -> 1/2" elbow... the other end attaches to the 1/2" pipe that will run to the propane tank hose).

The simple solution is that I need a 1/4" MPT - 3/8" MPT fitting to connect the two... but it seems as if this fitting doesn't exist.

Advice?

I'm about to scrap the hard plumbing and just attach a flare fitting to the burner and run a propane hose, but I really wanted the clean look of the black pipe and I wanted to have my shut off valve mounted on the front of the stand (for easy access).

You know what, Travesty... I don't need you making me look bad by providing the completely obvious easy answer. :D

Thanks for the help, brotha! You'd think I'd have common sense... but sometimes I think all this beer drinkin' has just killed too many brain cells...

Haha, no problem. :jnj

I always prefer to look at Home Depot or Lowes first. Usually I end up cobbling something together from what's available locally cause I'm too impatient to wait for an internet order to arrive!

Alright... that didn't work. The fitting that goes into the burner has to be a propane orifice fitting, otherwise you get fluffy yellow fire instead of the nice blue jet flames. FAIL.

So, in a perfect world (and I've already looked on McMaster-Carr) I need a 1/4" MNPT Orifice x 3/8" MNPT Pipe fitting. I'm 95% certain it doesn't exist.

Now to redesign my propane plumbing...

Wow, I'm surprised I didn't catch that when I first read your post! You definitely need the orifice! I'm using this one in my stand which I believe has a 3/8" flare end on it. Then you need a 3/8 female flare to 3/8 MNPT adapter. You'd think there would be one out there somewhere but my quick search is coming up blank.

On my stand I used soft copper tubing to connect the iron piping to the burner. This pic shows it pretty well.
